Photos of Surnames on Signs/Shops/Vans

We need help. As part of our upcoming book on Oxfordshire surnames we want clear images of certain surnames shown on a shop, a van, a street sign or elsewhere. High quality images needed (at least 1MB tiff or jpeg file) – ideally a closeup of the name, not of the whole van/shop. Please get the property owner’s written permission to use the photograph for a book.

Names we especially want are: Ayres/Ayris; Beckinsale; Blay/Bleay; Calcutt; Dix; Drinkwater; Edgington; Eeles; Harris; Howse/House; Lardner; Quarterman(i)n(e); Townsend; Tuckwell; Upstone; Wiggins; Wing; Yates.

Also we are still looking for older photos of shops, delivery horse and cart etc. related to any well-known Oxfordshire surnames. Please ensure you have copyright permission.

Any photo used will be acknowledged in the book.

Send images to: editor@ofhs.uk with your contact details and a description.

Thank you!

  • Thank you Joy for your comment. We welcome family histories from anyone who has good Oxfordshire ancestry, especially with multiple Oxfordshire names such as you have. OFHS members often get in touch and share connections. Our DNA project is also helping to link people from the county.

  • I notice an Emma has written on 2nd June 2019 to you Sue, listing surnames in her ancestry. Among these is the name “Timms” which I also have in my family tree. Perhaps, Emma and I may be related.
Looking at your list of names from Oxfordshire, I also have other surnames in my family history you have on the list.
