New Monumental Inscriptions for Wootton, Oxon released

CD cover for Wootton MI
Alan Simpson

This CD of Monumental Inscriptions for Wootton (near Woodstock)  is now available, covering three churches:

Wootton, St Mary the Virgin
Kiddington, St Nicholas
Glympton, St Mary.

The recording and photography was carried out by an OFHS team, assisted by some local villagers, between 2019 and 2023.

(To avoid any possible confusion. This is the parish of Wootton, Oxon. (near Woodstock) not the parish of Wootton, near Cumnor, formerly in Berkshire. The latter was transcribed by a local team, as a text-only transcript, in 2002 and is already included on our CD OXF-MON.)

The transcript records nearly 1000 separate memorials with photographs and transcripts of each of them. The earliest recorded and transcribed is dated 1513 and range to the 2010s. Across the three churches family names such as : LESTERS, SANDERS, BUGGINS, CRISP, LEE,THOMSON, WILSDON, BARNETT, HAWKES and WHEATE feature many times.

Amongst the images and transcripts is a rather splendid monument for the fallen in WW1 and WW2  of Wootton and lists a Private Victor BARNES of the Canadian Mounted Rifles.

The CD or download file contains photographs of all the monuments, with their transcriptions, plus a name index and a clickable plan of the churchyard. Where possible the team have cross referenced to other sources such as the Burial Registers for the parish to validate the entry on the monument.

OXF-MI-WOT, is available, at £6 plus postage, from the Society through our shopping cart – for the Download  or the CD
