Mark Lawrence of the Oxfordshire History Centre tells us that the Oxfordshire County Council has published a new version of its online catalogue, Heritage Search, now including local historic mapping – www.oxfordshire.gov.uk/heritagesearch.
Following the launch of the new Heritage Search website which launched last year, the big new feature released in May 2023 is a free mapping platform, providing base layers of historic Ordnance Survey mapping from the 1870s to 1990s, at both the six-inch and 25-inch to the mile scales. This is the first time that Oxfordshire residents and researchers have enjoyed completely free access to large scale Ordnance Survey mapping over such a generous date range. The mapping platform is supplemented by a host of ‘feature layers’ which can be displayed over the Ordnance Survey base maps.
Mark also says: The mapping platform can be accessed via the ‘Maps’ tile from the Heritage Search home page, or directly at https://heritagesearch.oxfordshire.gov.uk/mapping .
Be sure to take a look at the help https://heritagesearch.oxfordshire.gov.uk/mapping/guide and coverage https://heritagesearch.oxfordshire.gov.uk/mapping/layers pages, as the full picture of partial or overlapping coverage of different map editions can get quite complicated at times.
