This is a Hybrid meeting with the talk starting at 8pm (UK Time) – Hall doors will open at 7:30pm and the Zoom meeting will start at 7:55pm

Speaker:  Simon Townley

Talk Summary: This talk will look at new work on a swathe of west Oxfordshire parishes stretching from Chastleton on the Gloucestershire border through to Spelsbury and Enstone, via Churchill, Sarsden, and Chadlington. The area contains some notable country parks and estate villages (e.g. at Cornwell, Sarsden, and Ditchley), and saw some lasting Roman Catholic recusancy amongst gentry families such as the Brownes and Ansleys. It also contains several deserted medieval settlements. The talk will pull together some of the main themes emerging, including reference to the main farming families in the area.

Speaker Bio: Simon Townley joined the Oxfordshire VCH in 1987 and has been County Editor since 1996. So far he has contributed to eight volumes in the series, six of them as editor, and is involved in several county societies including the Oxfordshire Record Society, the Oxfordshire Buildings Record, and the Oxfordshire Local History Association.
