This is a Zoom meeting.  The Zoom meeting will open at 7:15pm (UK time) and the talk will start at 8pm.
Note: Between 7:15pm and 7:55pm we will have breakout rooms where members can talk about various topics, determined nearer the date of the meeting.

Speaker:  Janet  Few

Talk Summary:  Using a series of case studies, this presentation looks at those who may have found themselves on the margins of society and the sources that we can use to trace their stories. The examples used will vary but may include the sick, prostitutes, those accused of crimes, those in asylums, the poor, the illegitimate and others who were stigmatised by society.

Speaker background: Janet was a founder member and former chair of the Society of One-Place Studies and has written guides to that particular aspect of local and family history.  “Ten Steps to a One-place Study” is her introductory booklet and “Putting your Ancestors in their Place” is a more in-depth guide.  She is researching her own family history, with an emphasis on putting the lives of my ancestors into a wider context.  Her website Granny’s Tales contains her own memories, the stories of family treasures and the results of some of her family history research.  Working with the “A Few Forgotten Women Team”, she focuses on preserving the stories of the ordinary and the marginalised; people who have little voice in the historical narrative.  Her book Tracing your Marginalised Ancestors focusses on this topic. Janet teaches family and local history classes and is a tutor for Pharos Teaching and Tutoring Ltd. who offer a range of online genealogical courses.

Currently, she is serving as the president of the Family History Federation. and works closely with historical organisations in her home county of Devon and she is also the chair of Devon Family History Society and the convener of their virtual meetings.
