Oxfordshire Parish Registers and Bishop's Transcripts

Colin Harris for a long time devoted tireless work and energy to a handbook of the Oxfordshire Parish Registers and Bishop’s Transcripts. It includes ecclesiastical parishes in: Oxford City; pre-1974 Oxfordshire (the historic county); and that part of Berkshire (the Vale of White Horse) which was transferred to Oxfordshire as a result of Local Government Reorganisation in 1974. Also included is a guide to deposited non-parochial registers and/or copies.

With each parish is given the church dedication, the name of the Hundred (H) and Poor Law Union (PLU) in which it lay, and a map reference. Details of chapelries and peculiars are also shown. Townships, tithings, liberties, hamlets and other small places are listed with reference to the ecclesiastical parish in which they lay, thus providing a comprehensive genealogical gazetteer for the county.

The work is now updated under the banner of the Free Lists and Indexes from Oxfordshire Family History Society.

We also attach to this page the original 7th Edition of Oxfordshire Parish Registers and Bishop’s Transcripts published in 2006 with updates published in the 2011 and 2015 supplements. They are not so current as the website itself, but may be valuable for offline reference purposes.
