Some notes on now to register for the Zoom talks and links to the Zoom meeting participant guides. The guildes cover using Zoom on Android, Ipad, Mac systems and computers running the Windows operating system.
Leave No Stone Unturned
This is a Zoom Meeting on 13 May 2024 with the talk starting at 8pm. Speaker John Vigar - This lecture looks at the burial places of the famous and infamous and uses their gravestones or memorials as a starting place for an investigation into their lives. Subjects range from Florence Nightingale to Jerome K Jerome and all sorts in between, including some John feels need to be better known.
Ancestors on the Margins
A Zoom meeting on 10 June 2024 - Where Janet Few will using a series of case studies look at those who may have found themselves on the margins of society and the sources that we can use to trace their stories. The examples used will vary but may include the sick, prostitutes, those accused of crimes, those in asylums, the poor, the illegitimate and others who were stigmatised by society.
AGM and The Great Fire of Warwick
24 June 2024 - Hybrid Meeting - AGM followed by Charles Eldridge talking about the fire of Warwick. Charles recently found out about the Great Fire of Warwick in 1694 as part of his family history investigations. This talk will look at why fires started and how town planners changed the design of towns to avoid further fires. It was also look at how those affected by the fire received compensation.
Writing your Family History
8th July 2024 - In this meeting over Zoom, Gill Blanchard will show us how to bring the story of our ancestors to life. How to stop researching and start writing, choose a format and what to include. What to do with our family stories, missing pieces, and anomalies. We will discover how to bring life to the page with the author of Writing Your Family History (Pen and Sword, 2016) and experienced writing tutor and biographer.
James Sadler - King of All Balloons
24 July 2024 - Hybrid Meeting (Exeter Hall and Zoom) - In this talk Mark Davies looks at the life of the Oxford hot-air balloon pioneer James Sadler (1753-1828), the ‘King of all Balloons’ first Englishman to fly?
The Great War - was nothing learned?
In this talk on 12 August 2024, over Zoom, we will explore a range of technological and other developments which show just how radically things changed in four years, and how much was learned - from air power and fire power, through manufacturing and science, to infantry tactics and approaches to command.
RMS Titanic Made in the Midlands
9 September 2024 - Based on his own research Andrew will tell the story of the Midlands’ industrial work on the ship and the fate of the local passengers. Chastleton to Enstone: new VCH work in West Oxfordshire
This is a Hybrid meeting on 23 September 2024 with the talk starting at 8pm (UK Time). Speaker: Simon Townley of the VCH. The talk will look at new work on a swathe of west Oxfordshire parishes stretching from Chastleton on the Gloucestershire border through to Spelsbury and Enstone, via Churchill, Sarsden, and Chadlington.
Conserving your Family History
This is a Zoom meeting on 14 October 2024, with the talk starting at 8pm. Speaker Sue Gibbons - This talk will look at the general principles for keeping things safe and in good condition. Detailed advice on caring for and storing original documents, maps, books and other paper items, photographs, etchings and paintings, textiles such as samplers, christening robes, unforms etc, inherited objects including furniture, jewellery, ceramics and toys.
Cemeteries of Oxford – More Than a Century of History
The hybrid talk by Trevor Jackson covers the history of Oxford’s cemeteries, how they came about, where they were located and how they came to fill up so quickly early on.

11 November 2024 - Zoom Meeting and a chance for members to remember, by talking about them, the people in their families that they have discovered who gave their lives in the service of their country.
