Surname and DNA Project Status May 2020

Sue Honore

Outputs

From this project we aim to produce:

  •  A large pool of DNA tests from which we can map Oxfordshire surnames
  • A book on Oxfordshire Surnames to be published in 2021-2
  • Individual surname sheets describing the occurrence of a surname in Oxfordshire over time, family groups, and with references to many other places where individuals with that surname in Oxfordshire can be found. These surname sheets will be downloadable from the OFHS shop starting in late 2020.
  • A database containing over 100,000 incidences of individuals recorded in Oxfordshire with a given surname, including all spelling variants and close-sounding names. This database will be available to OFHS members only in 2022-3. Why not join the Society to get access?

Where are we now?

There are 424 members of the DNA project, of which 241 are male Y-DNA (surname line) tests.

For our research, parish record data analysis for the top 350 surnames has been completed with another 50 or so being worked on.

The surname reports are on target for launch in 2021, with an initial small batch possibly available to OFHS members late 2020.

A database of the transcription of all the Oxfordshire record lists will be available in 2022 or 2023. So far we have almost 100,000 lines of data from a wide variety of books and lists and expect to add to that significantly. The database will be accessible to OFHS members only.
