List of Surnames researched
Column 1 is the full list of names we are searching – about 1550 – with the core variants. There are many other variant spellings in our records but they not listed here for reasons of space.
Column 2 contains “Yes” to indicate the top 400 or so names we are researching as a priority.
Column 3 contains “Yes” to indicate those surnames for which we have Y-DNA available in the Oxfordshire DNA project.
All three of these categories will change over time as we review each surname in detail. If several people with the same surname have a DNA test it may move a surname into the top 400 list if it is not already there.

Caroline,
It looks like you may have some interesting Oxfordshire history. If you haven’t yet done so, you might want to make use of our Search Services available from this website to get all the Coles from Kirtlington (and surrounding areas) to go back beyond Fanny. I am sure you know that there are many spellings of that surname too from COALS to COLLES and maybe even COLLIS.
Have you checked out the workhouses website by Peter Higginbotham which mighty have more general information for you on the Woodstock Hensington workhouse?
There is quite a bit on boat people in Oxfordshire. They are a challenge as many were on the move constantly. Have a look at HeritageSearch on the Oxfordshire History Centre website for images, records, oral histories and books they might hold. Also the Eureka Partnership has published a couple of booklets entitled “The Boat People of Oxford Canal”. There is a classic book by Mary Prior called “Fisher Row: fishermen, bargemen and canal boatmen in Oxford 1500-1900”. Mark Davies who is also an OFHS member has a strong knowledge of the waterways around Oxford and might be willing to answer specific questions. The Canal and River Trust might have information.
So far we haven’t written up a specific name report on COLES for our members but may well do in the next year or so.
I hope this helps.
Sue Honore
Hi I live in Australia after emigrating here in 1977, have recently returned and have been researching our family history, Coles family that lived in Kirtlington in 1700’s & 1800’s. My cousin and I have found a number of graves and have confirmed our direct line links to Fanny Coles of Thrupp who died young at 23 and had a son John who was 3yo and was sent to workhouse in Hensington. We also understand that the Vokes were a well know boat family who worked the canal boats, lock keepers and inn keepers. Any help would be most appreciated.
Hi Sue, Thanks for the response regarding the Holloway/Hollway, if you’d like I can send more information about the Holloway’s (of Charlbury) by Email. As for the Benfield section, the Benfield family did also go by Binfield aswell. The Binfield and Benfield family Crests’ are the same. The Banfield/Benfield family have branched off into different surnames throughout History. I’ll do some digging to see if I can find a connection.
Robert,
You are right that are a variety of spellings of both those surnames. We have over 30 spelling variants of HOLLOWAY (although that is the most common by far). Benfield is not so common a name although BENFIELD is the normal spelling in Oxfordshire, along with fairly common BINFIELD. There are also a few BEANFIELDs. Early people in Oxfordshire (16th/early C17th) seemed to be in the south of the county – places like Rotherfield Peppard, Sonning, Caversham or in Oxford city, so they may have come from elsewhere initially as there are more trade/movement routes into south Oxfordshire from London and the southern counties/port areas that way and we often find people migrate into the south of our county from those areas.
Sue Honore
Hi, For the surname Hollway, there is a different spelling of the Surname that goes by Holloway, the Holloways come from Charlbury and Woodstock. I am a descendent of The Holloways/Hollways. Also what can you tell me about the Benfield Surname in Oxfordshire? I am a descendent of the Benfields (modernized to Banfield where I live), Is there any connection between the Benfields in Oxfordshire and Dorset perhaps?
Thank you for telling us all about the spelling variations with Lanchbury – as with many names, there can be a wide variety of ways of spelling it, especially when most of the names were passed on orally for literate scribes to write down based on strong accents!
I assume you must be relatively local, but we don’t have our own research centre any more. We are based at the Oxfordshire History Centre in Cowley (St Lukes Church, Temple Rd, Oxford OX4 2HT) and you are welcome to turn up there on a Tuesday when we have advisors who can help you. You may also find some extra Lanchbury records in the History Centre itself. We also have advisors in other libraries on certain days. See our website for details: https://www.ofhs.uk/news/helpdesks/advisors-helpdesks .
I can’t immediately find Hercules b 1850s marriage to Mary but someone could help you dig for it.
I have LAUNCHBURY’S that come from Oxfordshire they seem to be mainly around Chadlington! The old spellings are LANCHBURY/LAINCHBURY/LAMPREY as you have in your list with a yes for priority research!
From as far back as 1470 my 11 x Great Grandfather Robert the spelling was Lanchbury then in the records! My 10 X G/Grandfather was called Richard Lanchburie Born 1500 so another variation on the name! Then with my 8 x G/Grandfather was called Hercules Lanchbury! My 3 x G/Grandfather was called Thomas Lanchberry, so another variation on the name! Then my 2 x Great G/Father was called Henry Lansbury so again another variation on the name! My G/Grandfather Frederick Launsbury in the 1861 census, 1871 census it’s now Lamchbery, 1881 census it’s how we’ve always spelt it Launchbury, 1891 census it’s now Landberg so completely different spelling, 1901 and 1911 Census records it’s back to the way we spell it Launchbury! The last one in line for Launchbury’s was my Grandmother Minnie Maud! They’ve moved when my 3 x G/Grandfather Thomas is born in 1780 to Long Combe, then when my 2 x G/Grandfather Henry is born in 1820 and my Grandfather Frederick is born in 1856 they’re in North Hinksey
So far I’ve been unable to find out what my 6 x G/Grandmothers surname is all we’ve got is Mary born in Chadlington in 1683 she married Hercules Archelons Launchbury (Lanchbury in records)? Don’t know if you can help but we’re not sure if Hercules Lanchbury born in 1850 married a Mary Crosse or a Mary Fletcher, would I be able to find this sort of information out if I came to do some research like this at your centre?
Thank you for your helpful reply. I’ve found the wills [also on FindMyPast] and I’ve found more people with the spelling Huick, in particular, who seem to belong to the same family. Will keep looking in Northamptonshire, for a start.
Helen, that is one of the more unusual names in Oxfordshire. I know of several brothers/cousins who were baptising children in Banbury in the early 17th century. Names starting with a Y’ are a challenge. Have you tried looking for variants that might be less obvious such as those starting with ‘Ew’, ‘Eu’ ‘U’, ‘H’ and ‘J’? I have seen Jowick, Hewick, Ewick. Also at a push it might also be connected to York/Yorke. If you contact OFHS Search Services you could get a list of baptisms/marriages/burials concerning these names – see the section of our website under resources. There is a will transcription on our site for 1592 for a Robert Yowicke and 1602 for a Joice in North Oxfordshire so you might want to chase those wills. See
the wills section of our resources on this website. As they don’t seem to be in Oxfordshire before the late 1500s/early 1600s the family may have migrated to the county from elsewhere in that period. This is not always a given, but often people who settled in North Oxfordshire around the Banbury area would have migrated from further north in England, so you might want to go searching outside the county in late medieval times. I can’t find an entry for this name in Reaney & Wilson (Oxford Dictionary of English Surnames).
Sue Honore
Has anyone ever come across the surname Youicke / Yerwick / Yowick from the Banbury area? The first reference I have found to it is a girl christened in 1633. I would love to find more of these people prior to this date and if possible, where on earth does it come from?
Thank you Margaret – I will pass this on to Sue Honore our Surnames Project co-ordinator. (I have Phipps in my line – it was may maiden name, I was born in Oxford. Haven’t found any of my lot in Hook Norton though!)
I see that SOMERTON has a Yes as researched. My Summerton family (the spelling used in South Africa) were originally from the union of James Summerton & Jane Phipps of Hook Norton. 3 of their sons went to Eastern Cape, South Africa in 1870s and their are many descendants.
Allanna,
Thank you for your details on the Sheppard family of Britwell Salome. That surname is a name which is especially strong in Oxfordshire, although there are many different spelling variations. Are you sure that Timothy’s mother was Ann Keturah Talbot born in 1777? – that would have made her fairly old to be giving birth in 1832. There is another Timothy born to a Thomas and Anne Keturah baptised in 1808, so you might have an extra generation to insert. If you want a full list of the Sheppards baptised in Britwell Salome (and elsewhere) you can ask our Search Services to supply them. See Search Services. If you have any Sheppard cousins, especially males who are willing to do a Y-DNA test, do encourage them to join our DNA project; there are many Australian descendants of Oxfordshire men there and some Shepherd/Sheppards. http://www.familytreedna.com/groups.oxfordshire. Have you read the Victoria County History on Britwell Salome? Enclosure took place in the 1840s which might be why your ancestors decided to head for Australia. https://www.british-history.ac.uk/vch/oxon/vol8/pp43-55 You can also register your name interest on OXSIL (Oxfordshire Surname Interest List) at http://www.oxsil.org.uk. I hope some of this helps. Good Luck.
Sue Honore
Hello I am in Australia and notice that Sheppard has two yeses in the columns. I am a descendent of Timothy Sheppard who came to Australia in Feb. 1844. Timothy was born in Britwell Salome Oxfordshire 6th Aug 1832. His father was Thomas Sheppard born 1773 and Mother Ann Keturah Talbot born 1777. According to the1841 census Timothy lived with his wife Harriet and several of their children, Thomas resided with them in Britwell Salome. Timothy married Harriet Brooks at Cuxham Oxfordshire Holy Rood Church of England 3rd Oct 1831. Timothy and his family were Pioneer settlers in the Coburg/Pentridge area of Port Phillip (Melbourne) Victoria Australia. My great, great grandmother- Timothy and Harriets’ daughter, Ann Elizabeth Sheppard was born in Britwell Salome Oxfordshire in 1834. I would like to know more of the Sheppard family and their lives in Oxfordshire before departing England for Australia. I am happy to share the Australia history of the family I have researched.
Hi Dee,
Thank you for getting in touch. You are a member of the Oxfordshire DNA project (joined August 2019) but I will send you a private email on your details.
Sue
Hi,
My Oxfordshire folk are: Stockford, Betteridge, Hawkins, Dixon, Hitchcox, Thornett, Hale, Soloman, Townsend, Selman, Speed, also possibly Webb, Sturdy, Padbury and Lord. The mtdna haplogroup that’s come down the female line from Jane Speed (born 1690, Asthally) is X2. This maternal haplogroup originates in the Levant and I wonder if it came to England with the Roman rule. eg their WAGs.
I feel I may have joined this project already ? but now cannot sign in. I did get an email from Sue at some stage but maybe when I joined via ftdna.
Cheers, Dee
Jill,
Thank you for telling us about your Widdows ancestors. It is one of the names we are tracing in Oxfordshire and I’ll note your information.
If you need more help: Did you know that there is a local history group https://www.churchillheritage.org.uk/ in Churchill which may have information on the Widdows family in the village? If you want anyone to check BMD records from 1537 or early census records we at OFHS provide a search service . You can also join our groups-io discussion forum which you can email to at: Oxfordshire-England-genealogy@groups.io where people discuss Oxfordshire ancestors.
Sue
My grandmother was Annie Elizabeth Widdows born 5 Jan 1898 in Churchill, Oxfordshire. In 1901 she was living in Kingham Road, Churchill with her parents, 3 sisters and paternal grandmother. My great grandfather was George Widdows born 1862 in Churchill and lived there all his life. He had 5 siblings. In 1891 he married Hannah Louisa Gascoivne in Banbury. Don’t know if this is of interest to you, but if you have any further information I would love to know. Thanks
Reeves variants: Ryves/Rives/Rieves
Kathleen,
Thank you for your information on the Faringdon Townsend links. All research is useful and we know there was a fair bit of traffic of families between the western parts of Oxfordshire/Berks and Wales – your family proves that.
Sue Honore
Im not sure if you have this info already but I’m interested in the surname Townsend and in My family connection to Richard Townsend of Faringdon. I have been researching Townsends in Chepstow that led me to John Townsend In Fairford and his Will of 1836 a business man with family connections to Townsends in Neath, William Townsend Alderman Of Newport Mon and to poet Edward Thomas. Johns Will names some 25+ beneficiaries and this led me to Richard Townsend. My 2xggm Elizabeth Townsend married Robert Fiske in Chepstow, Elizabeth is named as Sister in John’s will and a daughter Elizabeth Fiske in a Probate Will dated 1820 for Richard that I found on ancestry. I have baptisms For Son John, Daughters Elizabeth, Charlotte married to Thomas Rose and for Mary and Susannah who marries John Griffiths in faringdon living in Chepstow but not for Sarah. I have a marriage for a Sarah Townsend to Richard Townsend in faringdon but on ancestry sites is recorded as Michard. Sarah and Richard are the parents Of Alderman William Townsend and 3xggp of Edward Thomas1878-1917. Hope this is the right place to share.
Hi Craig,
Yes the Poynter/Pointer family were definitely around Stanford in the Vale/Sparsholt/Letcombe Regis area in the 16th century. There are nearly 15,000 surnames in total, and we extracted the original list based on ‘Oxfordshireness’ and number of baptism & burial events. It does look like your name could have snuck into the list but didn’t. I’ll put it on the to-do list for us to tackle when we have cleared the backlog. Thanks for getting in touch.
Sue
Hi there. My 2x great grandfather was born in Childrey in 1804, his surname was Herbert. However his mother was a Poynter from Stanford in the Vale. The Poynters lived there for many generations but I don’t see the name on your list. Are you familiar with it? Thanks, Craig.
Carole,
Thank you for your message and apologies for the slow reply. We’ve had our server upgraded.
Firstly, we would love you to join the OFHS. It will provide you with many benefits, including some concerning the surname & DNA projects, especially over the next year or two. You can join from this website.
Your surnames are good Oxfordshire surnames and we are happy to have you as part of the Surname/DNA project. Also if you are interested you can transfer your Ancestry DNA test to our own DNA project for free. I will send you a message offline about how to do that.
We look forward to having you as part of the team.
Sue
Ayres, Timms (priority surnames), Hine & Lewin are all Oxfordshire relatives on my family tree. I have just become aware of your work through the Family History Guide. My DNA was done through Ancestry. I am not a member of the Oxfordshire Family History Society but am willing to join. Thank you for your significant work.
Hello Denise,
The list of surnames with ‘Yes’ against them are names that we consider strongly ‘Oxfordshire’ or very important in Oxfordshire. Hence Fidler is marked but not Williams. The Surname/DNA project is a research project. As part of the project we are encouraging people with those Oxfordshire names to get DNA tested, especially males. We are also asking that anyone with those core names send us summary information they have on their family so we can build up a bigger picture of Oxfordshire surnames and get back in touch with them when we get to doing work involving their specific name. Combined with original research we are doing, we are using the data for a number of outputs. We are in the process of writing a book based on deeper research into Oxfordshire surnames. We are also producing summary pages of individual names over time and long term, a large database of all records found in as many original sources as possible on that name from medieval times to 1900. The last two are likely to be available only to OFHS members, so we’d be very happy if you would like to join the Society. Those will be the methods used to send information out, rather than replying to individual queries. Unfortunately we don’t have the capacity to do that and do not have permission to share all that we have. I hope you understand. If you have a query about Oxfordshire parish records (baptisms, marriages, burials) on your names though, you can contact our Search Service which can supply you with that information (see website resources). I hope this helps.
Sue Honore
I noticed that my Fidler/Fiddler ancestors are listed on your page with a ‘YES’ in the second column. My Williams ancestors don’t rate as well.
Does that mean that you are collecting or have collected material on the Fidler/Fidler family. If so, I am interested in obtaining a copy of that information, if possible. At present I am not a member of your society, so I realise a cost may be involved. My above ancestors were from Bampton//Hailey/Witney areas.
