Europeana Collection event, Sunday, 26 October in Wantage

OFHS volunteers will be helping with the collection at this event in Wantage.  The concept of the Europeana project is that, across Europe, collection events are being held at which visitors bring World War I memorabilia – photographs, letters, diaries etc.  These are scanned or photographed, and a “virtual museum” is growing on the web at www.europeana1914-1918.eu/en

The publicity says:

“Do you have a box hidden deep in the attic, or under the bed, that holds your great grandfather’s war diary? Maybe a letter from the front line? A photo taken at the time? Or a recording? Is there a special story behind it?

Then show us!

We want to save this material and share it on the internet so everyone has a better understanding of what the war meant to ordinary families in Wantage and Oxfordshire.

Bring your items to our WW1 roadshow at The Beacon, Wantage, on Sunday, October 26, 10am – 4pm. Experts will be on hand to digitise your material and add your details to the online archive Europeana 1914-1918. Project staff will also be available to record your oral stories.

The Europeana 1914-18 archive will provide some answers, preserve generations of stories and bring people closer to those who witnessed the war at first hand.”

More detail is in an article by the Oxford Mail at www.oxfordmail.co.uk/news/11543142.Wantage_residents_will_have_their_war_relations__diaries_preserved_online/

To complement the event, we will have an advisor with our parish registers and county-wide databases on computer at The Beacon too.
