Oxford Prison Employees - new book

Carol Richmond

Oxford Prison Employees is Carol Richmond’s latest book, with details of over 700 employees, covering the period 1809-1926.

Some of the warders had served in the army prior to the prison, and Carol has used sources in The National Archives to glean details including their physical appearance.

Quarter Sessions records, censuses and extracts from Jacksons Oxford Journal have been used to add details for each of the employees.

It’s interesting how many employees are from out of county, often coming from other prisons such as Leicester, Holloway, Liverpool …

An excellent analysis of the Prison staff – available from the OFHS bookstall at meetings for just £4.50, or posted for a little more – see the books link on the left at www.ofhs.uk

A detailed review will appear in the April issue of the Oxfordshire Family Historian
