Detained in Britain 1914–1920 – Germanic Internees and POW Camps in Oxfordshire - Oxfordshire FHS Talk 25 April 2016

On Monday, 25 April 2016, Colin Chapman will talk to Oxfordshire FHS on:

Detained in Britain 1914-1920 – Germanic Internees and POW Camps in Oxfordshire

On the outbreak of war with Germany, civilian males of military age with Germanic-names throughout the (then) British Empire were arrested, questioned, and any considered a threat to security were interned for the remainder of the war. Many from around the Empire were sent to POW Camps in Britain. As the Great War continued, enemy military combatants were captured and also imprisoned in Britain. This illustrated presentation by Dr Chapman explains the background to civilian internment and combatant imprisonment for over 500,000 men from Germany and her allies during WW1 and describes the lives and experiences of those German prisoners, specifically in camps in Oxfordshire.

We meet at the Exeter Hall, Oxford Road, Kidlington, OX5 1AB, with the talk starting at 8:00pm. Doors open at 7:15pm, when there will be advisors offering computer and genealogy help, books for sale, and tea and coffee available.

Non-members are very welcome.
